Started in late 2016, we're a 501(c)(3) US nonprofit currently documenting what individuals, organizations and governments are doing worldwide to protect biodiversity and wildlands.

We founded Conservation Atlas from the perspective of someone passionate about exploring the natural world and interested in contributing to its protection. We wanted to find a way to get involved and help conservation as responsible travelers, and later on to inspire others to do the same. Numerous conservation projects and initiatives around the world rely on sustainable tourism for partial funding and for raising awareness of their work. Throughout 2017 and 2018 we traveled to 13 countries to visit conservation destinations, including national parks and private reserves, lodges, community initiatives and more.

Ultimately, we want to produce an online resource and an annual international festival that make it easy for people to connect with conservation areas worldwide and help local development through sustainable and responsible travel, contributing to an economy based on the protection of the natural world.

Conservation tourism is, simply, tourism which operates as a conservation tool. More precisely, it may be defined as commercial tourism which makes an ecologically significant net contribution to the effective conservation of biological diversity.
